Before any device, there is first aid. This is what the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association teach for a child over 1 year old.

    Can't cough, speak or breathe? Call 911, or have someone call, and put the phone on speaker.

    Do this first

    Lean them forward. Give 5 separate, firm blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

    Support their chest with your other arm.

    For a small child, kneel behind.

    The Heimlich maneuver

    Stand or kneel behind. Fist just above the navel, other hand over it. Pull sharply in and up, 5 times.

    For a small child, kneel behind and use gentle but firm thrusts.

    Keep your fist below the ribs, not on them.

Keep alternating 5 back blows and 5 thrusts until it comes out, or they can cough, cry or speak. Even if it comes out, they should be checked by a doctor. Thrusts can cause injury.

A baby under 1 is different Call 911. Give 5 back blows, then 5 chest thrusts. Never abdominal thrusts on a baby.
